Margit: Home Free

Historical Context:
Home Free is set in 1944 and follows the story of eleven-year-old Margit and her mother, Czech Jews who have escaped the Holocaust and who have been accepted as refugees by Canada. It realistically explores the difficulties they face in a new and unfamiliar country, as well as the prejudice they encounter from some Canadians.

Class Activities:
Discuss how Margit and her mother came to Canada. The journey must have been very frightening, and their arrival in a strange new country very difficult as well. Do you know anyone who has come to Canada as a refugee? Have you ever spoken with them about their journey to Canada and the dangers they faced along the way?

Web Resources:
As Kathy Kacer explains in the epilogue to Home Free, very few Jews were allowed into Canada during World War II, despite the terrible dangers they faced in Europe. Visit the Virtual Museum of Canada's Open Hearts, Closed Doors exhibit to better understand the plight of Jewish children who, having survived the war, came to Canada as refugees after World War II.
