Paper Bird
Izzie's Paper Bird

In The Christmas That Almost Wasn't, Izzie, Jasper, Joey, and Alice are given the task of getting ready for the big family party, which includes decorating the Christmas tree. Because they don't have much money to spend, they make homemade ornaments: strings of popcorn and rosehips (which look a bit like cranberries), flowers made of paper and pipe cleaners, and beautiful paper birds.

The birds that Izzie makes are origami, or folded paper ones, which can be difficult to make without some practice. We've given you directions for a paper bird that is just as pretty and a lot less difficult to make.

Materials

  • one sheet of 8-1/2" x 11" construction paper
  • markers, glitter glue and sequins to decorate
  • string or ribbon to hang the finished bird
  • scissors
  • pencil
Instructions

1. Download and print out a copy of the template for the bird's body.

2. Fold the construction paper in half across the middle, then cut in two to make two 5-1/2" by 8-1/2" pieces.

3. Cut around the template, then place it on top of one of the pieces of construction paper.

4. Trace around the template in pencil, and then cut out the bird's body from the construction paper.

5. Cut a slit in the body (use the line on the template as a guide) for the wings.

6. Take the second piece of construction paper and accordion pleat it along the short edge.

7. Carefully insert the folded paper in the slit in the bird's body and fan out the pleats.

8. Now you can decorate the bird however you like: glue on sequins for the bird's eyes, and colour with markers and glitter glue.

9. To make a hanger, punch a small hole in the tip of each wing and thread through some string or ribbon. This will help keep the bird upright when you hang it up.
