About the Authors Our Canadian Girl is proud to bring together some of Canada's finest writers for young adults. The authors of the Our Canadian Girl books include such award-winning talents as Cora Taylor, Anne Laurel Carter, Budge Wilson, Lynne Kositsky, Kathy Stinson, Julie Lawson, Sharon McKay, and Priscilla Galloway. Troon Harrison, Millie: Ride the River Troon Harrison has written over a dozen children's books including The Long Weekend, Goodbye to Atlantis, and Courage to Fly, which were selected as "Our Choice" by the Canadian Children's Book Centre. The Dream Collector won the Blue Spruce Award and A Bushel of Light was selected as an Honour Book for the Geoffrey Bilson Historical Fiction Award in 2001. She lives in Toronto.Read an interview with Troon here. Deborah Ellis, Keeley: Turtle Mountain Deborah Ellis's first book, Searching for X, won the Governor General's Award in 2000. Her next book, The Breadwinner, was shortlisted for he Red Maple Reading Award and the sequel to that book, Parvana's Journey, won the 2003 Ruth Schwartz Children's Book Award. Priscilla Galloway, Lisa: Overland to Cariboo Priscilla Galloway's previous books include Truly Grim Tales, Snake Dreamer, Too Young to Fight and three titles in the acclaimed Tales of Ancient Lands series. A number of her books have been named Our Choice selections by the Canadian Children's Book Centre, and she has also been nominated for the Red Cedar Award, the Mr. Christie's Book Award and the Canadian Library Association's Young Adult Book Award. She lives in Toronto. Read an interview with Priscilla Galloway here Kathy Kacer, Margit: Home Free Kathy Kacer's first novel, The Secret of Gabi's Dresser, was based on the experiences of her mother, who hid in a dresser during the Holocaust while Nazi soldiers searched through her house. The Secret of Gabi's Dresser won the Silver Birch Award and the Canadian Jewish Book Award. Her second novel, Clara's War, also received glowing reviews and won the Hackmatack Children's Choice Award. Kathy Kacer lives in Toronto with her husband and teenage children. Read an interview with Kathy Kacer here Cora Taylor, Angelique: Buffalo Hunt Cora Taylor was born at Fort Qu'Appelle and grew up on a farm near Fort Carlton in Saskatchewan. She moved to Alberta in 1955 and now lives in Edmonton. Her previous books include Julie, which won the Canada Council Children's Literature Prize in 1985 and was the CLA Book of the Year in 1986; The Doll, which won the Ruth Schwartz Children's Book Award in 1988; and Summer of the Mad Monk, which won the CLA Book of the Year for Children in 1995. Read an interview with Cora Taylor here Budge Wilson, Izzie: The Christmas That Almost Wasn't Budge Wilson was born and educated in Nova Scotia, but spent many years in Ontario. She now lives in a fishing village on the South Shore, Nova Scotia. She has won many awards for her writing, including the CLA Young Adult Award, the Ann Connor Brimer Award, the City of Dartmouth Award, and many Canadian Children's Book Centre Our Choice Awards. She also won First Prize in the CBC Literary Competition. Her collection of short stories, The Leaving, was named a Notable Book by the American Library Association and was later included on its list of "The 75 Best Children's Books of the Last 25 Years." Read an interview with Budge Wilson here Anne Laurel Carter, Elizabeth: Bless This House Anne Carter is the author of two picture books, two novels for young adults, and a number of acclaimed short stories. Winner of the Vicky Metcalf Award for best short story in 1999 and the Thistledown Young Adult Short Story Competition in 2001, Carter has a master's degree in education and has taught primary school in both southern Ontario and northern Quebec. An editor with Copp Clark for several years as well as a teacher, Harris began writing when her own children were small and has been writing for and about young people ever since. Read an interview with Kathy Stinson here Lynne Kositsky, Rachel: A Mighty Big Imagining Lynne Kositsky is the author of Rebecca's Flame, A Question of Will, and Candles, which was shortlisted for the Geoffrey Bilson Award and was an Our Choice Selection of the Canadian Children's Book Centre. She has won the E.J. Pratt Gold Medal and Award for Poetry, and the Canadian Author and Bookman Award for Poetry.
